You can be depressed and not feel sad or blue. Depression can also be a haze of sleepiness, distractedness/obsessiveness cycles, and a twinge of irritability that can be hard to recognize because you might already be a “fiery” person. It can feel like a lazy Sunday that keeps imposing itself for weeks or months.
Can we just… I’ll leave this here.
depression is characterised by blunted affect, and that doesn’t always take the form of sadness. it can look like an inability to be enthusiastic about things you used to love, an unwillingness or inability to open up to intimate partners in someone who usually enjoys intimacy, a lack of interest in sex in someone who’s usually sexual, or sustained fatigue in someone who doesn’t have preexisting insomnia or other conditions that cause fatigue. in older cis men (also other people but it’s very common in that demographic), it can look like the irritability the OP mentioned, often concomitant with an inability to focus or remember things - which makes the irritability worse, of course. you might feel unable or unwilling to engage with your life, leading to withdrawal from social activities and avoidant behaviours with colleagues and loved ones.
basically: if you ever feel like your mood is “off” in any way, like you can’t focus the way you used to, or like you’re always tired, depression may be the cause (or making an existing condition worse). one in three adults will experience a clinical episode of depression in their lifetimes, but depression doesn’t have to be major to have an adverse impact on your life.
so if something feels off in a way you can’t really quantify, you’re not just imagining things - you might well have depression, and you don’t have to let it keep you off your game. there are heaps of things you can do to feel better or cope more healthily, ranging from medication and therapy to taking good care of yourself (eating what makes you feel good, doing activities you like doing, etc). please don’t feel like there’s nothing you can do if you feel like this!
Hot damn if I can get the doctor or therapist I saw to fucking believe this, though.
Irritability is honestly my most prevalent symptom
